1. One person is selected at random from a class of 16 males and 19 females. Find the odds against selecting a female and a male.
2. An ice cream store sells 22 flavors ice cream. Determine the number of 3 dip sundaes. How many 3 dip sundaes are possible if order is not considered and no flavor is repeated?
3. Suppose you draw a card from a well-shuffled deck 52 cards. What is the probability of drawing a 9 or king?
4. A single die is rolled. Find the probablity of rolling an even number or a number less than 3.
Please help and if you can explain that would be great, Final tomorrow.
Solution
There are 16 males and 19 famales
Odds against selecting female = 16/19
Odds against selecting males = 19/16
------------------------------------------
2) Total favours = 22
No of 3 dip sundeas when no flavour is repeated and order does not matter = 22C3
= 1540
3) Prob for a 9 or king = p(for 9) + P(for King)-P(for both)
P(for both in one card is impossible. P for 9 = 4/52 as there are 4 9\'s.
Similarly P for king = 4/52
Hence Prob for a 9 or king =8/52 = 2/13
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4) A die has outcomes 1,2,3,4,5,6
Even outcomes = 2,4,6
<3 = 1,2,3
Both = 2
Hence probablity of rolling an even number or a number less than 3
= (3+3-1)/6 = 5/6
