What causes lactose intolerance in humans?
| Lack of glucose in the adult intestine |
Solution
Answer: Lactose intolerance is caused by lack of lactase in adult intestine.
Lactose intolerance is the inability of adults to digest milk and other dairy products. Lactose digestion is catalyzed by enzyme lactase in the intestine, which breaks lactose to the monosaccharides, viz., glucose and galactose. These monosaccharides are then, absorbed in the intestine. In absence of lactase, the milk sugar, lactose remain undigested leading to symptoms such as bloating of stomach, gas, stomachache and at times diarrhea. This medical condition is called Lactose intolerance.
