Experiment 1 Design an Experiment In the following experimen

Experiment 1: Design an Experiment:
In the following experiment you will design and execute an experiment to test several factors that influence seed germination. Whatever your experimental design, be sure to include controls, both positive and negative, and make sure it is reproducible!

Materials:

100 Beans
(10) 5 x 8 in. Bags
Permanent marker
Ruler

Procedure:
1. Think of 10 - 20 variables that may affect seed germination.
2. From your list of variables select three to test. Form a hypothesis for why each affects seed germination.
3. To germinate the beans, place one folded paper towel, moistened but not soaking wet, into the 5 x 8 inch bag. Place 10 beans in a horizontal line on the paper towel.
4. Use a different prepared bag for each variable tested. Label each bag with the variable being tested.

5. Hang each bag using masking tape in the environment you select.
6. Create a table for your data, including title, units, and any other useful information.
7. Select the appropriate type of graph, and report the data you collected.

Questions to be answered:

Question 1. Identify the three independent variables you tested in your experiment. Be as specific as possible.

Question 2. What was the dependent variable in your experiment? Be as specific as possible.

Question 3. List at least 2 controls in your experiment. Be as specific as possible.

Question 4. State your hypothesis for each of your experimental conditions tested. These should be three separate hypotheses that are clearly labeled. Be as specific as possible.

Question 5. Describe your procedure/methods for your experiment. Include all steps in sequence so that your experiment could be replicated exactly by the reader. Be as specific as possible.

Question 6. Discuss your results from your experiment. What conclusions can you draw? What are the meanings behind your data? Is your hypothesis supported? Why or why not? Be as specific as possible.

Question 7. Discuss any sources of error in this experiment. What could have or did go wrong? How might this have impacted your data? How could you address/fix such errors in future experiments?

Solution

1. there independent variables

T = paper towel

B = bag

W = water

2. the dependent variable is SG = Seed germination

3. one of the controls would be the moist paper towel

and the other one would be the amount of water.

4. hypothesis 1

W= water

we need to control the use of was we ned to use it sparingly and can\'t just pour the water , as excess water will hamper with the quality of beans after germination as the seed will soak a lot of water.

B = bag

we need to have a bag as well, the bag acts as an protective layer and keeps the water within and moreover keeps the seed isolated from air. Air contact might lead to bacteria formation .

T = paper towel

Paper unlike cloth has a better water retaining capacity so it helps in the germination process.
