Im learning about the the Citric Acid cycle and the products

I\'m learning about the the Citric Acid cycle and the products of each step within the cycle. Succinyl CoA makes Succinate which is then converted to Fumarate. As a pharmacy technician, Succinate and Fumarate are familiar names to me in medications such as Metoprolol ER Succinate (Toprol XL) and Quetiapine Fumarate (Seroquel). Metoprolol is used for high blood pressure and Quetiapine is used for schizophrenia.

So, I\'m wondering if these are the same ingredients as those made throughout the TCA cycle. If so, how do they work in helping with high blood pressure and schizophrenia? Do they work in the mitochondria or somewhere else in the body?

Solution

No these things are surely not the same.

Metoprolol as you might know comes under a group of drugs called as beta blockers. This is used to treat high blood pressure, chest pain due to heart disease and heart attack. They act on the blood vessels causing them to dilate and hence regulate the blood pressure.

Whereas quetiapine is a antipsychotic drug administered in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression.
