Blood Gas Problem:

pH: 7.30 HCO3-: 20 PCO2: 32

What is the diagnosis & is it compensated?

Solution

Normal valu of acid base is pH 7.35 -7.45

HCO3 - 22-26

PCO2-- 35-45

For given question it is the case of metabolic acidosis. Metabolic acidosis is an acid base disturbance characterize by reduction in bicarbonate ions leading to an elevation in PCO2 /HCO3 ratio and thus an elevation in hydrogen ion concentration.

The reduction in PCO2 is accomplished by increasing alveolar ventilation.
