You are comparing two different processing methods used for forming Ti6Al4V into a femoral stem of a hip joint prosthesis. The following diagram shows the structures that result from the two methods:
Solution
Generally, the methods used for forming Ti6Al4V into a femoral stem of a hip joint prosthesis can be compared on the basis of the number of grain boundaries. If a method has a higher number of grain boundaries then that method results in a material with high tensile strength as compared to a method with a lower number of grain boundaries. The method with a higher number of grain boundaries results in a material which is more susceptible to corrosion. Also, smaller grains result in a stronger material and larger grains result in a weaker material. If a material has a higher number of grain boundaries it will take more stress and hence causes plastic deformation.
