A boy can row a boat at a constant rate of 4 mi/hr in still water. He rows up-stream for 14 minutes and then rows downstream, returning to his starting point in another 12 minutes. Find the rate of the current.

Solution

Let c=speed of current
ts=d t=time, s=speed, d=distance
12(4+c)=14(4-c) Since the distances are equal.
48+12c=56-14c
26c=8
c=8/26=4/13 mph
