A jet pilot diving vertically down at 600 km/hr wants to make a quarter turn without experienceing an acceleration bigger than 5g. At what height above the Earth must he begin the turn? You may assume that the speed is constant and that after the quarter turn the plane, moving horizontally, is just abovethe ground level.

Solution

The Acceleration the pilot feels is

atot=a+g

=>5g=a+g

a=4g

Centripetal acceleration a=V2/R

V2/R =4g

R=V2/4g =(600*1000/3600)2/4*9.8

R=708.6 m
