The first advantage of the double strand structure is the increased stability it provides. Prevents loss of information: Since the double helix is complementary, if a base is lost on a strand it can be repaired back by knowing the base on the other strand. Double helical structure keeps genetic code relatively safe and it can only be read when necessary.
