What is the experience of the spoken word in terms of neurophysiological correlates?
Solution
Spoken words are decoding of the speech signal that travels along the auditory pathway to defined structures in the brain for long term memory.Psycholinguistic research has postulated that there occurs an activation of many words in the listeners\' mental lexicon and there occurs a competition as to which words has to be recognised.Words that match the listener\'s mental lexicon are assumed to be strongly activated while mismatched words are inhibited. Difference waves of mismatched and matched words are replicated in the left-hemispheres . The P350 effect refers to neurophysiological index that refers to the activation of matching words in the listeners\' mental lexicon.Apart from P350 effect and the behavioural responses, brain itself has potential ranging between 350 and 500 ms that is equally reduced for matching and partially mismatching words in comparision to unrelated control words. It has been reported that a neuronal network in the left-hemisphere is associated with lexical access and relating to matching and partially mismatching words. Also, during first initial stages of lexical identification, neural processing of matching words and partially mismatching words are quite different from each other and neither inhibits the processing of the other.
