(Based upon 4.19 - University of Physics 14 edition) The largest piece of equipment that an astronaut on Earth can lift has a weight of 392N. On the Moon, the acceleration due to gravity is only 1.62m/s^2.

(a) What is the mass and weight of that same piece of equipment on the moon?

(b) What is the mass and weight of the largest rock the astronaut can lift on the moon?

Solution

Mass = 392/9.8 = 40 kg

(a) Mass on moon = 40 kg

     Weight on moon = 40x1.62 = 64.6 N

(b) Weight of largest rock on the moon = 392N

     Mass of the largest rock on the moon = 392/1.62 = 242 Kg
