A recent published study focused on the effect of melatonin on the reduction of cancer cell viabilty, most probably due to the tumor specific production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The effect of melatonin on 3T3 was also compared. It was found that when both the cancer cells and 3T3 cells were grown in the absence of FBS, there was no effect on the 3T3 cells but reduced the proliferation of melanoma cancer cells.

Again, in presence of FBS, there was no effect either on the melanoma cancer cells or the 3T3 cells. So, it can be concluded that FBS has some inhibitory effect on the action of melatonin on melanoma cells but not on 3T3 cells.
