I dont understand Thhis equation... b=2m-3
Solution
b=2m-3
This is called a linear equation and you can do a lot with it!
The b and the m are called variables, the 2 is a constant and is the slope or rate of change. The -3 is a constant or the y intercept when graphing.
As you pick a value for the m then you get a particular value for b.
For example if m is 1 then b=2(1)-3 : two times one minus three which is -1 so b=-1
If m=10, b=2(10)-3 so b=17
If you plot the points on an xy graph let m be the x value and b be the y value so you have two sets of points now:
(1,-1) and (10,17)
to find slope we use a formula (y-y)/(x-x) so plug in your points and you get (17-(-1))/(10-1)=18/9=2
Notice in your equation the 2 in front of the m. If you use graph paper and graph accurately you will see that your line hits the y axis at -3. We can prove it too :)
If you are on the y axis what is the x coordinate? I hope you said 0. So plug in the 0 for the m variable:
b=2(0)-3, so b=-3
