A person with a mass of 62 kg is riding in an elevator. Calculate the person\'s effective weight if the elevator is: a) accelerating upwards at 3.5 m/s^2; b) traveling at a constant speed of 2 m/s; c) accelerating downwards at 5 m/s^2; d) in free fall (the cables broke!).
Solution
a) Force = m(g+a) = weight = 62(3.5+9.8) = 824.6N
b) Force = weight = mg= 62*9.8 = 607.6N
c) Force = m(g-a) = weight = 62(9.8-5) =297.6N
d) Force = m(g-0) = weight = 0
