Explain the effect on the mother and fetus if iron stores remain consistent through the whole pregnancy.

Solution

Iron is an important mineral for the normal growth of the fetus. Iron deficiency is associated with the abnormal development of the fetus brain, anemia, premature birth, and sometimes with the death of the fetus. In the case when the iron store remains consistent through whole pregnancy the fetus would develop normally with the healthy brain. Extra iron is not toxic to the body. The recommended dose of iron is 18mg/day. A pregnant woman if takes higher than this amount, the extra iron would not be absorbed thus, no toxicity.

Iron toxicity is reported in individuals that take 1000mg of iron/ day.
