Biological Science in the News (please do not copy others)

Search a currenty biology-related article online

Identify source (internet link) and date of news.

Write the title of the news article.

Use the D.A.R.E. critical thinking components to discuss article: Define, Analyze, Resolve, and Evaluate.

Define: What is article about? (do not discuss the important points here)

Analyze: a. Discuss salient/important ideas or points.  b. What impact do you think this news has or will have on you or the world we live in?

Resolve: Generate a few questions that you have about the information.

Evaluate: Is it a controversial or a critical issue that needs more research? Is it information you think should be more widely publicized? Should any action be taken? by whom? Explain your thoughts.

Solution

Define: Human kidney progenitors isolated, offering new clues to cell renewal.

In a first-of-its-kind look at human kidney development, researchers at The Saban Research Institute of Children\'s Hospital Los Angeles have isolated human nephron progenitor (NP) cells.

Analyze: (A)1)A key unit of the kidney, the nephron is a tiny structure that filters waste.

2)In humans, about 500,000 to 1,000,000 nephrons are generated before week 34 to 36 of fetal gestation, a point at which NP cells are fully depleted and nephrogenesis ceases.

3) The loss of a sufficient number of nephrons at any time after this period, leads to irreversible kidney failure, as no further cell repair or regeneration can occur.

(B) This news has very big impact on the world for the research of new clues to cell renewal.

Resolve : 1)It is a leading technique to find against kidmey disease?

2) Stem cells translation medicine will help scientist understand how these progenitor cells become renal cells in the developing fetus?

Evaluate : It is a critical issue,The information is more wildey publicized .

Laura Perin, PhD, co-director of CHLA\'s GOFARR Laboratory for Organ Regenerative Research and Cell Therapeutics in Urology takes the action.

This proof of concept opens up a lot of applications to researchers, who can employ the technique with other organs, such as the pancreas or lung. \"This technique provides a \'how to\' of human tissue during development,\" Perin says.

It is an important tool that will allow scientists to study cell renewal and differentiation in human cells, perhaps offering clues to how to regulate such development.
