You are given 1L of algae and its concentration is 456,300 cells per milliliter (cell/ml) and you need a minimum concentration of 5,000 cells/ml to start with. How many milliliters of the stock would you need to add to achieve a final concentration of 10,000 cells/ml in a final volume of 50 ml of seawater? Show all work, and units.

Solution

C1V1 = C2V2         : where

·        C1=INITIAL CONCENTRATION= 5,000 cells/m

·        V1 = INITIAL VOLUME =?

·        C2 = FINAL CONCENTRATION = 10,000 cells/ml

·        V2 = FINAL VOLUME = 50 ml

Putting the values in equation we get

(5000* V1 )=(10000*50)

OR V1 =10000*50/5000 = 100

THUS INITIAL VOLUME OF STOCK SOLUTION REQUIRED = 100 ml

You are given 1L of algae and its concentration is 456,300 cells per milliliter (cell/ml) and you need a minimum concentration of 5,000 cells/ml to start with.
