Identifying Independent and Dependent Variables Activity 1 A

Identifying Independent and Dependent Variables

Activity #1

A developmental psychologist is interested in how the activity level of four-year-olds is affected by viewing a 30-minute video of SpongeBob SquarePants or a 30-minute video of Sid the science kid.

IV:The level of Activity

DV:affect on four-year-old

Hypothesis:

A psychiatrist wants to test the impact of a new drug designed to increase the ability of teenagers with ADHD to take accurate notes in class.

Hypothesis:

A biopsychologist wants to know whether exposure to testosterone in adult female rats increases their aggressive behavior.

Solution

The dependent variables are those which rely on the other variables. Such as Price of a commodity depends upon its weight/size. So, price is the dependent variable here and the \'size / weight\' are the independent variables.

A hypothesis is the intution generated from the observation or practical experience.

On the above knowledge, we can easily answer these questions-

1) The IV is the content of video watched - Sponge Bob or Sid the science kid.

The DV is activity level of four year old children.

And Hypothesis is - Activity level is higher for the sponge bob.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) The ID is the type of drug given - new drug or placebo.

The DV is Accuracy of notes taken in class.

And, the Hypothesis is - Accuracy is higher for the new drug.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3) The IV is Type of drug given- Testosterone or Placebo

   The DV is Aggressive behavior.

Hypothesis is - Aggressive behavior increases with exposure to Testosterone.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4) The IV is the Temperature of the room - Cooler or Normal.

   The DV is Productivity.

hypothesis - The productivity is higher on cooling the temperature of room.
