I always find health care delivery an interesting topic. I suspect that we are about to see advances (higher quality care, cheaper costs, better health outcomes) in health care delivery over the next decade. Much of this in response to moving health care records to electronic format. I imagine that in electronic format the data can be shared with other hospitals and government bodies.

I was curious as to what your thoughts are on the security concerns. Is this meta-data? What kind of data drives the analytical tools you mention?

The health care industry is moving towards adoption of electronic health records . There are associated privacy and security implications to this move towards electronic collection and storage of sensitive health information .

The technological advances in online health care services are providing patients and care providers unprecedented access to medical records . Medical records can contain detailed information regarding a wide variety of personal medical data such as family histories , genetics , substance abuse and even mental health issues . When online medical records are available , healthcare communication and information access is made more efficient for referrals , prescriptions , appointment scheduling , obtaining speciality consultation and other medical information .

This unprecedented access to medical data comes with risks as privacy violations frequently occur at odds with the rigid requirements of the Health insurance portability and accountability act of 1996 (HIPAA) . The vendor IT contracts have provisions that counter HIPAA guidelines . There are contracts that say they will have realtime access to database , that they will have exclusive access to the data , that they can resell the data . Leveraging and commoditizing patient medical information have become common practice by employers , insurers and medical providers to help manage risks and maximize profits .
