World energy consumption is total energy used by all countries from a sources in one year. Current estimate (2013) of world energy consumption is 5.67 x 1020 J a. What is the average world power consumption in TW Tis tera is 1012)? b. What is world energy consumption in TWh? c. If electricity accounts for 18% of total energy world consumption, how much electrical power is consumed worldwide in TWh? d. Approximate percent consumption of world energy by region: 22% of North America, 5% South and Central America, 23% Europe and Eurasia, 3% Africa, and 40% Asia Pacific region. What is the total energy consumed in North America? e. Approximate percent contribution of electricity generation worldwide: Coal 41.3, natural gas 21.7, Hydro 16.3, Nuclear 10.6, Oil 4.4, Renewable 5.7. How much electrical power in Gw is generated by coal? How much electrical energy in TWh is generated by coal? How muchelectrica energy in generated by natural gas?

Solution

(a). The total energy consumption = 5.67*1020 joules

The given year 2013 is not a leap year i.e. 365 days

so the number of seconds for 2013 = 365*24*60*60

= 3153600 seconds

We know that power in watt = joule/second

So the total average world power consumption in watt   = 5.67*1020/3153600

                                                                                                = 17979.45*1012 watt

                                                                                                                = 17979.45 TW

(b). world energy consumption = power/no.of hours for year

                                                        = (17979.45*1012)/(365*24)

= 20524.48 MWH (mega watt hour)

(c). The total power consumed by electricity = 18% of total power

                                                                                      = (18/100)*20524.48*106

                                                                                             = 3694.41 MWH

(d). the energy consumed by north America = 22% of total power

                                                                                       = (22/100)* 17979.45*1012

                                                                                       = 3955.48 TW

(e). electrical power by coal = 41.3% of total electricity

                                                       = (41.3/100)* 17979.45*1012*(18/100)

                                                       = 1336592.3 GW

Electrical energy generated by coal = power/no. of hours for year

                                                               = (1336592.3*109)/(365*24)

                                                                = 0.152 TWH

Electrical energy generated by natural gas = 10.3% of total electricity

                                                                            = (10.3/100)*3694.41*106

                                                                            = 0.00038 TWH
