Describe the function of enzymes in biological reactions

Enzymes are biological catalysts, which helps in fastening the rate of reaction without itself being consumed in the reaction. Majorly, proteins and sometimes RNA acts as catalysts. Enzyme-controlled reactions are either degradative or synthethic. Degratative reactions involve breaking of complex substrate molecules to form products, and synthetic reactions involve fusion of distributed substrate molecules to form a complex product molecule.

For the reaction to be fruitful, it is required for the substrate to reach higher energy state (transition state). The activation energy required is altered by enzymes, so substrate molecules reach transition state with no much input of energy. Without enzymes, the reaction would have been impossible to take place. Hence, enzymes take part in biological reactions without getting consumed itself.
