Define Spherical Aberration. Then explain why taking a picture on a sunny day, you can use a very small opening in the diaphragm (iris) and the resultant picture is sharp, but on a dull cloudy day you must use a larger opening and the subsequent picture is not as sharp? If you were to choose between two f-numbers, f/2 and f/8 on a cloudy day with an old 33-mm film camera, which number would you choose and why?

Solution

f/2, if you got it on your lens. Allows you to chose a faster shutter speed than an f/8. The draw back is that you have a shallower depth of field. Not good for a scenic shot
