Principles and Guidelines for Interface Design Complete both
Principles and Guidelines for Interface Design
Complete both parts of the prompt:
1. Identify three interface types that are presented in Chapter 6, Interface Types. Find an example of each type that you can share with the class via, for example, a URL, a screen capture or a video. Discuss the research and design issues with each of the three interfaces you have chosen as presented in the book and with other sources, including your own thoughts. Make one recommendation for improvement for each one. (Note: You must support your response with citations and references.)
2. Play the first level of Aftershock and provide a synopsis on the interface type that it uses. Make two recommendations for improvement in the interface and explain why. Support your recommendations with the text.
Book: Interaction Design4TH by Preece, Jenny
Solution
There are many interaction type that have been mentioned in this book. Three of them are mentioned below -
1. Web Interaction Type -
Interactive web pages are example of Web Interaction Interface. They takes various input from users in form of navigation button, Scroll Bar, Forms etc. and based on that provide the output based on the user\'s request.
Example: Google is one of the best example of Web Interaction Type. (URL: www.google.com). The homepage of Google has one Text Box to enter the text to be searched, Two buttons labelled as \"Google Search\" and \"I\'m feeling Lucky\" to ask the user where he want to see all the search result or want to go to the first search, and also it has some of the hyperlinks for some other languages.
2. Mobile Interaction Type:
Mobile interaction type is mainly specific to mobile and handheld devices. As mobile phones are much smaller than the usual computer monitor, it needs to have easy to navigate and non-confusing interface for the mobile devices.
Example - All the app that we install in our phone are example of mobile interaction type. They are designed for some specific purpose. e.g. Facebook App for mobile has different interface then the Facebook web page however contains the same information. This is because of the smaller screen of mobile phone, most useful information are displayed first and other information can be seen using the navigation buttons.
3. Touch Interaction Type: These are usually a way to take the input from the user. Instead of traditional keyboard and mouse, user can provide the input by simply touching on the screen.
Example- Some of the ATM kiosk use this method to ask user\'s input like account type, transaction type etc.
Research and Design Issue:
1. Web Interaction Type:
As mentioned in the book, three key questions are - Where am I? What\'s here? Where can I go?
That mean easy navigation and user friendly presentation is one of the key issue of the web interaction type.
Recommendation: Provide enough navigation button on the web pages. On Every page provide the button to go to the Home page.
2. Mobile Interaction Type:
Because of the small screen of the mobile interface, its interaction and navigation need to be designed carefully. For Example - One need to have enough space on screen to accommodate his/her finger tips on the screen while touch-clicking on some button.
Recommendation: Mobile screen should be precise and clear. It should not have many un-necessary or less required buttons/text. All the navigation should be self-describing and well understandable.
3. Touch Interaction Type:
The main concern regarding the usability of this interaction type is, how useful it is? How this is more powerful than traditional keyboard mouse model. However, touchpad interface is very useful for touchscreen mobile but for microcomputer, keyboard mouse seems much faster than the touch screen.
Recommendation: It is useful where people need to provide fixed set of instructions, like ATM kiosk and Automatic Tickets Vending Machines etc.
Regarding the second part of the question: I don\'t know the game mentioned here, however by searching on Google, it seems to have keyboard and mouse interface i.e. Graphical User Interface (GUI).
Since I don\'t know the game, I can\'t suggest the improvement needed, but some of the general recommendation to improve GUI is, improvement of mouse sensitivity, comfortable keyboard buttons etc.
