Do you think it is possible to create machines – robots or androids (think of the robots in Star Wars, Commander Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation, the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica, etc.) – capable of having mental states and capable of being conscious? Would it require giving a machine a nonphysical mind or soul? What, if anything, does your answer presuppose about the truth of dualism?

Solution

A robot is a mechanical or virtual artificial agent. It is an electro mechanical machine, guided by computer program.

The computer program gives the robot an artificial intelligence. Although they are not conscious, they have a state of mind thanks to the artificial intelligence.

Due to this artificial intelligence, robots are being used in industry, in restaurants, and are programmed to do specific jobs. But this is purely artificial intelligence.

A robot cannot be given a soul. It cannot have feelings and emotions.

Dualism states that body and mind are not identical, mental phenomena are non physical. Yes, it is true in case of robotics, as their mental capacity is created by humans through programming.
