Lamb carcasses before and after chilling are weighed In tota

Lamb carcasses before and after chilling are weighed. In total 6 carcasses are weighed (each carcass is weighed both before and after chilling). The average weight before chilling is 17.1 kg (with a standard deviation of 0.34 kg). The average weight after chilling is 16 kg (with a standard deviation of 0.9 kg). The average weight loss during chilling can be calculated to be 6.4%. What is the absolute uncertainty in this value? (Give your answer to 1DP)

Solution

weight before chilling = 17.1 +/- 0.34 kg

uncertainity percent = 0.34/17.1 =0.01988

weight after chilling = 16 +/- 0.9 kg

uncertianity percent = 0.9/16.0 = 0.05625

weight loss percent= (17.1-16)/17.1 = 0.06432

weight loss = 17.1 -16 = 1.1 kg

uncertianity in weight loss = sqrt(0.019882 + 0.056252)

                                           = 0.05965

aboslute uncertianity in wieght loss = 1.1*0.05965 = 0.066 kg
