D Question 5 0.5 pts The diploid organism Biologica isawesema has 10 TOTAL chromosomes in each of its somatic cells. If a germline cell from this organism divides by meiosis, the cells formed by meiosis I and cytokinesis will have CHROMOSOMES and DNA MOLECULES O 5, 10 O 10, 20 O 5, 5 O 20, 20 O 10, 10

Solution

One chromosome is made of one molecule of DNA.

Answer 5: In the pre-meiotic S-phase, each chromosome divides and forms two sister chromatids that remain joined. During meiosis I, sister chromatids remain together, and they remain together even after cytokinesis I, only to seggregate during meiosis II. Therefore, the number of chromosomes and DNA molecules would be 5, 5 (3rd option) per cell. [In all, two cells would be produced and total number of chromosomes and DNA molecules in all cells would be 10,10]

Answer 6: Meiosis II results in the formation of haploid organisms, i.e. cells with half the number of chromosomes. Thus, each nucleus will have 5 chromosomes, representing 5 DNA molecules (4th option).

Answer 7: Fusion of sperm and ovum, resulting in formation of zygote, restores the diploid state. Therefore, the zygote will have total 10 chromosomes (3rd option).
