During a lathe turn machining process, the temperature of the chips gets hot. Please list two main reasons contributing the temperature increase in the chip. How will the rake angle affect the temperature change in the chip? How will the shear angle affect the temperature change in the chip?
Solution
Reasons for increase in temperature in the chips:
1. Shearing of the chip due to plastic deformation.
2. Heat produced due to friction at the secondary shear zone.
Effect of rake angle on temperature of the chip:
As the rake angle increases the force required to shear decreases but the friction increases. But, the overall temperature of the chip is observed to come down.
Effect of shear angle on temperature of the chip:
As shear angle increases, the shear zone decreases and hence the heat becomes concentrated due to which the temperature of the chip increases.
