A particle travels along a straight line such that in 2 s it moves from an initial position S_A = +0.5 m to a position S_B = -1.5 m. Then in another 4 s it moves from S_B to S_C = +2.5. Determine the particle\'s average velocity and average speed during the 6-s time interval.

Solution

Total displacement=(sc-sa)=2.5-0.5=2 m;

Total distance travelled=(0.5+1.5+1.5+2)=6m;

Total time travelled=2+4=6 sec;

therefore average velocity is;

v(avg)=2/6=0.333 m/s;

average speed is

v(speed)=6/6=1 m/s
