1. a) Suppose that a farmer wishes to start a you-pick berry farm, where customers pick their own fruit from the berry bushes. In this variety of berry, the tall, thornless, and terminal flower phenotypes are produced by the s, t, and a alleles respectively. These phenotypes are recessive to the short, thorned, and axial flower phenotypes, which are produced by the S, T, and A alleles. The farmer has two berry plants. When selfed, the first plant produces tall, thorned plants with a mixture of axial and terminal flowers. The other plant produces a mixture of tall and short plants, which are all thornless and have terminal flowers. The farmer wishes to generate a pure-breeding line of tall, thornless plants with terminal flowers, as such plants are most convenient for berry-picking. What are the genotypes of the farmer\'s two original berry plants?

b) The farmer crosses the two berry plants, and obtains a number of different phenotypes in the F1 generation. What is the genotype of the F1 plants that the farmer should self to obtain the desired genotype in the F2?

c) What is the phenotype of these F1 plants?

A. Short, Thorned, Axial
   B. Tall, Thornless, Axial
   C. Tall, Thorned, Terminal
   D. Short, Thornless, Terminal

Solution

Recessive phenotypes: s, t, a tall thornless terminal

Dominant phenotypes: short, thorned, and axial flower: S, T, A

First, cross between two berry plants

SsTtAa (P1)   x      ssttaa (P2)                         [Parents]

Possibilities of genotypes in F1:

a) The first genotype is for the first plant after cross. Therefore, there is the least chance of heterozygosity in second parent P2. That suggests that the P2 is pure recessive plant. The fact also got strong by more number of progenies in second genotype of progenies. Therefore, the real genotype of progenies type 1 is Ss Tt Aa. Moreover, the second type have genotype is ss tt aa. Only P1 is heterozygote.

b) Farmer wants to produce = tall, thornless plants with terminal flowers [pure breed] = ssttaa

So, the F1 for obtaining pure breed in F2, should have cross between F1 and ssttaa. For this, we need to cross with such F1 plant which has maximum recessive trait. The tall, thornless, Terminal genotype plant needs. However, in the options the most suitable is option D because these were easily available due to more number of progenies and having the maximum recessive traits.
