Tobacco smoking destroys cilia. These cilia lining the respiratory tract are known to push microbes and dust particles trapped inside mucus to upper part of respiratory tract. When these cilia are destroyed, microbes and dust particles are not cleaned up and they remain inside respiratory tract producing cough and infections.
