In the heart dissection you performed, you saw the smooth texture of the valves and how the leaflets fit together. How do you think the function of the valves would be affected if the valves were tough and filled with calcium deposits? Explain

Solution

Answer:

Our heart is the central part of circulatory system. Blood flows through our heart chambers by passing through heart valves. These vaves are opened in a unidirection pathway, there is no reverse flow of blood occurs.

Due to age or upon certain diseases, there is deposition of calcium on valve. This type of condition is called as valve calcification. The calcium deposition stiffen the cusp of the valve and may narrow the valve, the condition called as stenosis. Due to defect in the valve, it fails to either opens or close fully. When valve does not close tightly, there is full chance of backward flow of the blood, this condition is called as regurgitation.
