Ch. 22, Pr. 38
Solution
a)
When the magnet is falling thorugh the loop, the magnetic flux through the loop increases, thus by Faraday Law, an induced emf will be across the loop.
Now, for the loop in part (a), the circuit is complete, so induced emf will produced an induced current. This induced current will produce induced magnetic field opposite to the increasing magnetic flux though the loop.
thus the loop will act as a magnet with magnetic dipole moment opposite to the momenet of the magnet above.
thus this will repel the magnet and it will move with retarded motion.
b)
In this part(b), the circuit is not complete as there is a gap in the loop.
Thus no current will flow and thus the magnet will move unhindered.
