To what extent does socioeconomic status impact the number of new deaths by firearm suicide in males ages 15-34?
Null Hypotheses
There is no correlation between SES and number of new deaths by firearm suicide in males ages 15-34.
Alternative Hypothesis:
There is a correlation between SES and number of new deaths by firearm suicide in males ages 15-34.
Economic status would be the independent variable as changes (in income) may lead to changes in the status of the dependent variable. The cumulative incidence of new deaths by firearm suicide is the dependent variable that will be measured.
I would just look at income. Changes in economic circumstances (income) may have an effect on the cumulative incidence of new deaths by firearm suicide.
-Identify Population 1 and Population 2
-Are the variables continuous, ordinal or nominal?
-What statistical test would you use and why?
-What significance level would you use and why?
- So if I had to create a mock SPSS dataset based with 10 records and run the appropriate analysis (explain conclusions) how will I do so?
Solution
The population1 will be the socio -economic classes based on various income level and the other population is the number of suicide
a)The variable is ordinal.Because we can order the socio economic status of the people into variousa categories as low, medium and high
b)We will use the t-test statistic. For this we will first find the mean and standard deviation of the two sample and test for the difference in the mean,or the which mean is greaterUse a linear regression t-test (described in the next section) to determine whether the slope of the regression line differs significantly from zero.
c)You cam choose significance level as .05.Usually, a significance level (denoted as or alpha) of 0.05 works well. A significance level of 0.05 indicates a 5% risk of concluding that a difference exists when there is no actual difference. Choose a larger alpha, such as 0.10, to be more certain that you will not miss detecting a difference that might exist.
dIf you run the analysis if the p value is greater than .05 then there is no coorrelation between the SES and the suicide in the age-group of 15-34 and if it less then we will accept the alternative Hypothesis.
