The state’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is tasked with protecting public health and the environment. Researchers are interested in examining the use of chemical fertilizers and water quality to see if there is a relationship. As a DEQ analyst, you have collected the following information from all 50 counties within the state.
Both the use of chemical fertilizers and water quality are measured on a scale defined as:
Use of chemical fertilizers: 1=no use, 5=heavy use
Water quality: 1=very contaminated water, 5=very clean water
The DEQ Director believes that counties with a heavier use of chemical fertilizers will have poorer water quality. Complete the cross-tab below using the data from above. The variables have been grouped as: Low (1-2 on scale), Medium (3 on scale), High (4-5 on scale). Once you have tabulated the frequencies for the table, change all frequencies to percentages.
