Briefly describe the path that a protein, such as a hormone, that is manufactured on the rough ER would take in order to leave the cell. What would you need to know or measure in order to determine the residual volume of the patient described in Example?

Solution

The proteins or hormones which are secreted out from the cell contain a signal sequence and are synthesized in Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (Endoplasmic reticulam associated with Ribosomes).

After synthesized, the protein or hormones undergo post translation modifications in the Lumen of RER (Rough Endoplasmic Reticulam)

Then the hormones packed into vesicles and migrated to mearby golgi apparatus. In golgi complex the vesicles become Secretory vesicles and move towards plasma membrane. Then the vesicles fuse with plasma membrane and release the hormones by exocytosis process.

The exocytosed hormones show its function on surrounding tissue either by endocrine/ para crine / Autocrine manner.
