If you carry out the following serial dilution, what is the final dilution of the solute? Dilution A: 1 vol solute + 99 vol diluent; Dilution B: 1 vol dilution A + 99 vol diluent; Dilution C: 10 Vol dilution B + 90 vol diluent
Solution
Serial dilution is a method of dilution which involves step wise dilution of a substance in the solution to reduce the concentrations of the substance.
Dilution A :vol of solute is 1 and volume of dilutant is 99 which means final volume is 100 of which conc of solute is 1 so the dilution is 1:100or 1 is diluted to 100 times or concentration is 1/100 or 10-2
Dilution B 1 vol of dilution (1:100)+99 ml of diluent final volume is 100 of which 1 is diluted to 100 times or concentration is 1/100 or 10-2 here 1ml of 10-2 diluted to 100 times 10-2 /100 10-4.
C: 10 Vol dilution B + 90 vol diluent here we should note that the stock is 10 ml and diluted to 100 ml this becomes 10-5
