Q. We have been saying that the register set needs to be stored per-thread instead of just per-process in the process table. Why? After all, the machine only has one set of registers (if it has a single processor core).

Solution

Thread is a light weight process.Hence operation from a thread is faster .register set needs to operate at very high speeds.maintainence of thread is cheap as it is only an instance of process.In addition thread also support parallel operations whichcis an essential task in multitasking.whereas a process is heavy.Hence accessing the process in a process table takes lot of time and hence results in performance degradation,if register set is stored as a process in the process table
