When a popular band played at Elliott Hall, the box office receipts totaled $120,000. Student tickets cost $10 and non-student tickets cost $25. If 6,000 people attended the concert, how many were students and how many were non-students?

Solution

Let x nos. be student ticket and y be nos. of non-student tickets

10x +25y = 120000 ----(1)

x +y = 6000 ------(2)

Solve the two equations:

multiply equation by 10:

10x +25y = 120000

10x +10y = 60000

------------------ subtract

15y = 60000 ---->

y = 4000 non student tickets

x = 2000 student tickets
