How many homologous pairs of chromosomes are found in a human somatic cell nucleus?
- First I said 2 and it was wrong then I said 4 and it was wrong also, can anyone explain to me what I did wrong?
Solution
Answer: a diploid human cell contains 23 pairs of homologous chromosomes.
The cell has two sets of each chromosome; one of the pair is derived from the mother and the other from the father. One pair is inherited from father and other pair from mother. Human diploid cell has total of 46 chromosomes. Each chromosome has a homologous pair, hence we have 23 homologous pair in a somatic cell
