A water tank has a bottom piston with an area of 1 m^2 The water level inside the tank is 5 m. A second lank with the same bottom piston has a top pipe tilled with water to >> height of 5 m as shown in the figure Determine the forces needed to hold the bottom pistons in place. Neglect the weights of the pistons.

Solution

F =Pressure x area

= density * g* h * a

= 1000*9.81*5*1

= 49050 N

F is same for both the cases as area is same and pressure depends on height from free surface which is also same for both the case i.e. 5m
