Why study Western Civilization?

The reason why we study Western civilizations is because most of the people of colour live in countries that are western or have been already colonised by western people. Countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America have been ruled by people who trace their origins to western civilizations. After independence, the education system, judiciary and other aspects of administration of our former colonial oppressors were retained and thus when it comes to the study of history, we always see the glory of western civilization and the condemnation of our own. I am of Indian origin and even in India, the study of our country is in a very negative light, based on our colonial oppressors interpretation of a culture that has spanned over 7000 years. Until we shed this colonial mentality, that white is right and dark is a lark, we will continue to see western civilisation as the cradle of humanity and everything else a scourge.
