STEPS OF TISSUE REPAIR: (Steps in tissue repair, steps in wound healing):
The following are the sequence of steps that take place during tissue repair and replacement.
1). Activation of clot response: After an injury has occurred, the leakage of blood vesicles is sensed, which triggers the release of clotting factors, and clot is formed immediately to prevent the blood loss.
2). Release of inflammatory mediators: Inflammatory mediators are released in response to the clot and dead cells. Accumulation of these mediators is characterized by the swelling and redness.
3). Granulation tissues formation: This inflammatory phase is followed by the granulation phase and tissue regeneration. During tissue regeneration, the process of re-epithelization is favored, the epithelial cells migrate towards the wound environment.
Regeneration of the tissue: Tissue regeneration is associated with angiogenesis, during this stage the myofibroblasts contracts and the wound edges are pulled together, the collagen reinforces the wound, after which the myofibroblasts stop contracting followed by apoptosis.
In case of primary intension, the wound edges are brought together and united by means of sutures to minimize the tissue scars. In case of secondary intension, the wound tissue is allowed to granulate, the wound is covered with a gauge or drainage system is applied. Granulation causes scars, this is the reason because primary intension does cause scars, while secondary intension causes scars.
