Peak current in a cyclic voltammogram is 33 A The electrode

Peak current in a cyclic voltammogram is 3.3 A. The electrode area is 0.45 cm2, the diffusion coefficient for the redox couple is 9 x 10-6 cm2/sec, and the scan rate is 50 mV/sec. Assuming that you began with only the oxidized species and scanned negatively and that n=1, calculate the concentration of the oxidized species in the bulk solution in mol/L.

Solution

The peak current is given by the equation:

ip = 2.69x105n3/2ACD1/2v1/2

here A is the area Cis concentration,D is diffusion coefficient and v is scan rate

putting all values in the equation

3.3x10-6 (Amp) =2.69x105 *1*0.45(cm2 )*C *3*10-3 cm/sec1/2 *(50/1000)1/2 volt1/2/sec1/2

3.3x10-6 (Amp)=81.20*C(cm3volt1/2/sec)

C=0.0406 (amp sec /cm3 volt 1/2) =0.0406mol/mL=0.0406*103 mol/L
