A cloud chamber is set up in a region of uniform magnetic field provided by a pair of Helmholtz coils with their common axis vertical. Each coil has 200 turns and radius 0.105 m. What should be the spacing between the coils to provide the most uniform magnetic field? What is the direction of the current in each coil to provide a magnetic field directed up? How much current must be supplied to provide a magnetic field of magnitude 0.01 T?

Solution

a) for most unifrom magnetic field, coil must be titghtly positioned.

so there will be no spacing between them.

hence spacing = 0

b) Using right hand rule.

curl the finger of right hand in the direction of current then thumb direction will give magnetic field.

thumb is upward then finger have to curl in counterclock wise direction.

direction of current - counterclock wise Or anticlockwise

c) B = u0 N I / 2R

0.01 = (4 x pi x 10^-7 x 200 x I ) / (2 x 0.105 )

I = 8.36 A
