Assume you have been hospitalized for the past three weeks with a very large infected leg wound due to a work-related accident. Your po intake is very good and meets all your estimated nutritional needs. Explain how each of the following labs would be affected. a. Total Protein b. Albumin c. Globulin d. Albumin/Globulin ratio e. Pre-AlbuminSolution
Total protein measurement reflects the nutritional status which can be affected in which a specific protein is low or high, as the patient is on the bed for the past three weeks though with a regular diet and this should be diagnosed in order to diagnose the infection on the wounded leg.
Though a regular diet and the po intake is very good and meets all the estimated nutritional needs, large infected leg wound would cause inflammation, which further induces swelling and this can be caused by the hypoalbuminemia. Thus the levels of albumin in the body decreases. (Albumin affected).
There are many types of globulin present in our body which can be affected, if there is a large infected leg wound in an individual, means that it can induce high globulin levels in the body caused by bacterial infection.
Approximately a normal range of albumin is 39 to 51 grams per liter (g/L) of blood and a normal range for total globulins is 23 to 35 g/L. And the proper globulin to albumin ratio is 1:2. If any alteration in this could be a series problem which can be caused by the infected leg wounded body raising the immunoglobulin ratio and can cause hypergammaglobulinemia, also the hypoalbuminemia ( Low levels of albumin ). Therefore the affects all depends on the infection and the treatment.
Pre-albumin is a protein made in the liver and released into the blood, which means the infection from the wounded leg should have spread to the liver and caused damage to it OR the pre-albumin levels are lowered than normal range acting as a sign of poor diet (This is not possible as there is a regular diet)
