A proposed design for a part of a seawall consists of a rectangular solid weighing 17.09 kN with dimensions of 2.4 m by 1.2 m by 0.6 m. The 2.4-m side is to be vertical. Will this object float stably in seawater?
Solution
first find the volume of given object V = 2.4*1.2*0.6 =1.728m3
Bouyancy force = g* V * density of water = 9.81* 1.728*1000 = 16.95 kN
g = 9.81m/s2, acceleration due to gravity
Given weight of object = 17.09 kN
as the weight of object is greater than the bouyancy force we can say that it is not floating. it cannot float.
