Derive a balanced reaction for glucose fermentation to two m

Derive a balanced reaction for glucose fermentation to two moles of lactate. For this reaction answer the following:

a. Show how many electrons the two moles of lactate have relative to carbon dioxide.

b. Calculate the energy released in this fermentation.

c. What percentage of that energy is captured in ATP production?

Solution

a)

Glucose --> 2 Pyruvate

2 Pyruvate + NADH + H+ --> 2 Lactate + NAD+

b)

The standard free energy change of the reaction is -25.1 kJ/mol

c)

During the period of anaerobic glycolysis (Lactic acid) system, two molecules produced per glucose molecule i.e about 5% of the total glucose energy potential.

As there produced 38 ATP after electron transport chain i.e oxidative phosphorylation of glucose.

Here in anaerobic process only 2 ATP from one gluose molecule
