13. Discuss hormones involved in appetite management. Describe how their control mechanisms facilitate homeostasis relative to energy balance in the body.( 1-3 paragraphs at most. Maybe 3-5 sentences)
Solution
The important hormones that regulate the hunger and satiety for short duration are, Ghrelin, neuropeptide Y, cholecystokinin (CCK) and leptin.
Ghrelin is secreted by gastric mucosa, and it is having opposite effects to leptin, it indices the feeling of hunger. Neuropeptide Y is a neurotransmitter of brain that stimulates the appetite center. It also have other functions like learning and memory. The hormones insulin and cholecystokinin (CCK) are released from the GIT during the absorption process and they decrease the feeling of hunger on short term basis.
Leptin is the hormone of adipose tissue, released by adipose cells during the triglyceride synthesis. Leptin suppresses the appetite center and the feeling the appetite also suppresses (it causes a feeling of satiety).
Increased fat reserves in the body causes release of leptin by the adipose cells, this circulating leptin acts on
