Many people associate the phrase, \"survival of the fittest\" with Darwin. The concept of evolutionary fitness is, indeed, central to studies of adaptation and natural selection. What is evolutionary fitness? What are circumstances where individuals with the highest fitness aren\'t the most able to survive? What are circumstances where the evolutionary strategy with highest fitness cannot be attained? 100 words or more please

Solution

Evolutionary Fitness is how well a species is able to reproduce in its environment. If they\'re no longer reproducing then they are no longer evolutionarily fit. Evolution strategies use natural problem-dependent representations, and primarily mutation and selection, as search operators. In common with evolutionary algorithms, the operators are applied in a loop. The sequence of generations is continued until a termination criterion is met. As far as real-valued search spaces are concerned, mutation is normally performed by adding a normally distributed random value to each vector component. The step size or mutation strength is often governed by self-adaptation. The (environmental) selection in evolution strategies is deterministic and only based on the fitness rankings, not on the actual fitness values. The resulting algorithm is therefore invariant with respect to monotonic transformations of the objective function. We initially restrict our attention to an asexual population without genetic recombination. Then fitnesses can be assigned directly to genotypes rather than having to worry about individual alleles. There are two commonly used measures of fitness; absolute fitness and relative fitness.
