Discuss the differences and/or similarities in general between interval estimation and test of hypothesis.
Tests on Variances, Goodness-of-Fit and Independence
Solution
Interval estimation is a method to estimate the population mean. It si a range of possible values for the true population mean. This range of possible values, known as the Confidence Interval, can be used for hypothesis testing. The hypothesis can be rejected if the interval does not contain the null hypothesis. These confidence intervals are helpful in making statements about the range of effects. Narrowing the interval gives a more accurate decision, an estimate closer to the actual vale, which is not possible in the case of hypothesis testing.
Test on Variances: To test if the variances of 2 population are equal, F-test is used. This tes can either be two-tail or one-tail test.
Goodness of fit: This is used to determine if the distribution of the frequency of a nominally scaled variablematches a theoritical disstribution. This can also be for dichotomus variables like the test for independence.
Test of Independence: This test is useful to see if 2 categorical variables are independent or not.
